The Final Word On Star Wars

We saw The Force Awakens opening weekend but before we went I told my teenager I was going to provide the final word on Star Wars.
“The correct order for watching is the same order they were released in. There will be no commentary during the movie about whether things are right or wrong.
It is a movie and we are not going to be the people who wreck the fun and destroy the magic by analyzing every detail and discussing whether it was accurate.”
He looked at me and said, “ok” followed by a question of whether it was possible I would see the movie and decide it didn’t meet with my approval because it didn’t follow Star Wars history.
I told him it is a freaking movie and that sometimes the best way to enjoy one is to suspend disbelief and not get caught up in the chaos of what people think should have happened.

When we walked out of the theater we did so with big smiles on our faces and the joy that came from a shared experience.
Having consumed a ridiculous amount of soda and paid an even more ridiculous price for said drink we answered nature’s call and got to listen to others dissect the movie.
“It is impossible for a weapon to do what that one did. It wrecked the movie for me.”
After we walked out and headed to the car my son told me he thought the comment about the weapon was stupid, “if you can accept The Force and ships that fly through space at light speed why can’t you accept a weapon could be that powerful.”
I smiled and said, “exactly” and inside my head the 8 year-old boy who saw Star Wars at a drive-in in 1977 cheered.
