Cleveland Browns Fire Head Coach Rob Chudzinski

by Julian St Quinton

Sunday night, after the conclusion of the NFL regular season, the Cleveland Browns fired head coach Rob Chudzinski, not an entirely unexpected outcome of Cleveland’s meager 4-12 season record; another losing season.

Chudzinski was brought in at the end of last season to replace another single-season coach, Pat Shurmur, and, upon being chosen by Browns CEO Joe Banner, was touted by him as being one of the bright young head coaches in the NFL. However, despite this, he was let go after only one season, and the Browns still owe Chudzinski $10.5 million. The Browns ended the season with a seven game losing streak, completing the streak by losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday 20-7.

The team released statement with the announcement of his being let go:

“We appreciate Chud’s passion for the Browns, and we have great respect for him both personally and professionally,” the statement, which was not attributed to any person, read. “We needed to see progress with this football team. We needed to see development and improvement as the season evolved and, unfortunately, we took a concerning step backward in the second half of the year. Our fans deserve to see a consistently competitive team. We have high standards, and there’s an urgency for success. When we believed we were not positioned to achieve significant progress in 2014, we knew we had to admit that a change was needed, and move forward. Browns fans are the most loyal and passionate supporters in the NFL. We’re fully committed to bringing them the winning football team they deserve.”

Cleveland reportedly plans to begin its new head coach search immediate, with New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt expected to be among the candidates being considered. The Browns front office management, including team owner Jimmy Haslam, became convinced they had made a mistake bringing Chudzinski on as head coach, and were determined to make a change. Chudzinski had numerous challenges he was presented, most notably an unsettled quarterback situation in which throughout the season, three different players started at the quarterback position without any consistency in performance among them.
