Google Nest for Smart Homes
Julian St Quinton
Google is creating the “Works with Nest” developer program to control all of your at-home gadgets like cars, remotes, and your thermostat, just to start. You can speak directly into the Nest to have it turn down the heat in your home with the Nest Learning Thermostat. Smart homes seemed like a wave of the future, but it looks like they are here now. Google Nest creator, Matt Rogers, said the company’s goals for Nest include creating a seamless system that will help control all of the practical experiences of your home. Google’s other main goal is to sell more Nest gadgets that are compliant with the system. Right now the smart home markets is pretty fragmented and spread out. There are separate apps for each controllable function of a home. Some have tried to bridge the gap between the many apps available but this usually means more gadgets to do so. Google is attempting to offer the most streamlined system with the “Works with Nest” program. It works by putting sensors in Nest’s products. When these products are in motion, the machine learns their habits and then uses that information to understand other gadgets.
Many companies are excited about the innovations that Google has developed and are eager to get on board. The “Works with Nest” program already has LIFX, Logitech, Chamberlain and Whirlpool as partners to develop compatible technology. This will make our products smarter, more efficient, and able to operate effectively in our absence. For example, the Nest thermostat will notice when the home owner is away and will ask the Whirlpool dryer to change to Fan fresh mode to keep the cycle from ending early and to keep the clothes wrinkle free until they can be taken out of the machine. Another great innovation is the way that the Nest thermostat interacts with LIFX light bulbs to plash red if any of the products sense elevated CO2 levels in the home. The possibilities are endless and it seems like Google has finally found a way to make smart homes fully integrated and attractive to consumers.
