If I had the wings of a fox

I would fly

above the trashcans of suburbia

let my russet head turn to sniff the wind

follow my nose

to forest-clad mountains

*

If I had the wings of a fox

I would climb high in the sky

– high above the shouting heads

and pointing fingers of those glued to the concrete earth –

turn my face to the sun

and wing my way in search

of

green tranquillity

and

stone grown stability

*

If I had the wings of a fox

I would not be here with you

stuck in our mundane existence

drudging our lives from dawn to dusk

our tails drooping in the dust with exhaustion

*

No!

*

I would meet you on the wing

high in the air

spiralling up the thermals

to colourful glory

a thousand miles away from weariness and drear

*

We would fly together

– you and I –

to far-off places

explore the world

– and each other –

wing

beat
