It is more than a little dishonest to be using “white middle class” and “white working class” interchangeably. This quote about the “white middle class” is out of place with the pretext of this article (all about “working” class) and the rest of Williamson’s words which are clearly about the white “working” class.

The two classes come from vastly different circumstances: One of relative comfort and softness and the other from Bruce Springsteen’s fever dreams. It’s not fair or accurate to lump them together; their motivations and values are significantly different.

What is interesting is that a self-serving, lying, cronyist, elitist dimwit like Trump can find a way to appeal to both classes — enough so to take a national election.
