Switching Networks in Metamask: Connecting to Ethereum Mainnet and Testnets, Polygon, Binance Smart Chain, and xDAI

Some web3 applications may require you to connect your Metamask wallet to a different blockchain network. This is pretty straightforward, and this article will be showing you how it’s done!

Ethereum Mainnet/Testnets:

Metamask is built to make it super easy to connect to Ethereum’s Mainnet and Testnets. Ethereum Testnets are similar to the Mainnet except all assets are valueless. This makes these networks a great place to test out applications before experimenting with real money. Metamask comes with built-in support for the Ethereum’s Ropsten, Kovan, Rinkeby, and Goerli Testnets. A demonstration:

Non-Ethereum Networks:

Adding non-Ethereum networks is slightly more difficult. First click the networks menu, and then Custom RPC. Then fill out the fields with the info for the blockchain you are connecting to. The info for Polygon, BSC, xDAI, and their testnets is located in the table below. Here is an example of connecting to Polygon Mainnet:
