Far And Fast
It’s so bright. I don’t know where I am. All I can see is this huge, bright thing above me and all I can hear is a squawking sound seemingly coming from everywhere. I think the sound is coming from me. I can’t seem to stop this. I am really hungry- Oh! Oh no! This big thing just shoved something down my throat! Oh… This feels great! It makes me feel warm and I seem to have stopped the noise. Oh, thank you! You are a life saver! Boy, am I tired… I guess I’ll just… go… …
My life has been great! Two days ago these Two Other things came from the eggs next to me. They squawked just like me. I must look like them. They also look like The Big One who feeds us! So they must be who brought us here. I get food when ever I want it, I sleep all the time, and I squawk along with the other two who look like me. It’s warm most of the time. Sometimes it gets cold, especially when it’s dark out. But then The Big One just lays next to us and it’s warm again! I can’t imagine a better life than this. I have got it made here. Wherever this is. Wait… Where am I? I guess I am up high. But I have never been down, so who knows what’s down there? What do other places look like? Are these other places like mine? When I’m not sleeping I hear other sounds that aren’t squawking. I hear large sounds that sometimes frighten me. I also hear sounds that are constantly changing, yet still sound the same. I better stay here, though. It’s safe and warm here. Plus I don’t think The Big One can go anywhere else anyway. But wait… Where does The Big One get food? Oh! Here comes more! Mmmmm… I guess it’s time for sleep. ….I am so warm.
Things are changing… The Other Two and I keep growing. Our legs are longer and we have wings like The Big One. I am not sure how to handle this. The Big One still feeds us. They also try to move us towards the edge. I don’t know why this is. Do they no longer want us here? Have we done something wrong? I mean… I do wonder what’s down there. Is there food? Is that where The Big One gets it? Maybe they want us to find the food our selves? I don’t know if I can do that… Maybe I can try! I was here first so maybe I should be the first to leave? Do I want to leave? It’s so great here! But I wonder what’s out there… Maybe there are other places like this one? Or even better? I saw The Big One fly really far today. I bet I can fly. The Big One flies so far and so fast. But they always come back. When I think about what’s out there I think about not coming back. If I can fly like The Big One then I can probably get food just the same. Maybe I don’t need to come back. Maybe that is why The Big One keeps pushing us forward. Maybe they know that I want to know what else there is in this world. They wouldn’t feed us if they didn’t want us around… I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna fly! I’ll be even faster than The Big One and they will be so proud.
I’ve gotten bigger in the last few days. My wings look just like The Big One’s. The Big One is pushing me to go forward. To take the leap. It’s scary to think about leaving this place. I don’t know what could happen out there. I might fly too fast and hit something… Maybe I can’t fly as far as I need to and just fall…? Being here has always been safe. It has always been warm. Maybe I should just stay here…? The Other Two look at me when The Big One pushes me towards the edge. I think they want the same things I do but are looking to me to know how. I don’t think I can stay here. I want to know what’s out there and I want to fly far and fast. It’s hard and scary but if The Big One can, then so can I! This is it. I’m going to the end. All eyes are on me. Don’t worry Other Two, I will do it! Then you will know you can too!
Okay… here I go!………AHHH! Whoa! Whoa! I’m doing it! I am flying! This place is so big! I can go anywhere! I can’t believe I did it! Now all I need is to keep going. I wish I could thank The Big One for all they have given me, but I think my success is what they wanted for me, so I hope that is enough. Now it’s time. Now I can fly far and fast! It’s time to get to work!
