Should I Get My Teeth Cleaned Without Dental Insurance?

I pay $200 per cleaning twice a year without insurance at my relatively fancy Manhattan dentist. I haven’t gotten X-rays in the two years since I went off COBRA from my old job. I paid something like $47/month for COBRA, which included two cleanings/exams per year and one set of X-rays. I think the coverage for fillings/root canals/etc. was pretty good, but I never had to use it. I keep meaning to look into dental insurance plans offered at a discount through the professional organizations I belong to, but it is so daunting and terrible that I can never even stomach making it my 1 Thing.
