That’s a very cynical viewpoint.

And, I think the point has nothing to do with being a slave to your surroundings, but rather to be true to yourself. The talents you have are the ones you were born with. Your surroundings just offer you ways to find out what those things are (even if sometimes you must reject the direction your surroundings are pushing you in, when you realize they don’t fit who you are).
