A wastewater screw pump is defined as a displacement pump type, utilizing two or more screws that intersperse to pressurize fluids and move them in a system. Fluid, taken by screws that push it out from the other side, increases its pressure.

Types of Screw Pumps

Two main types of screw pump commonly used today are-

Two or Double Screw Pump: Also known as twin-screw pumps, these pumps function by accessing two intermeshing screws. A pump is often equipped with timing gears placed outside the pumping chamber, which is lubricated with oil to ensure that two screws are rotating accurately. Two screws don’t need to be in direct contact with each other, which helps extend the pump’s life.

Three Screw Pump: Or called a Triple Screw Pump, this pump uses one driving screw intermeshed with the other two screws to build pressure and flow fluid. The screw when encountering each other limits the pump to handling only clean liquids.

Also, three spindles screw pump is used in the marine and offshore industries to move high-pressure viscous fluids. Three screws rotating in opposite directions drive the liquid along with the screw’s spindles and forward in a closed chamber. These pumps transport viscous fluids with lubricating features and various applications, including circulating, boosting, burners, fuel injection, oil hydraulics, and others.

Uses of Screw Pumps
As screw pumps provide high flow rates even in viscous liquids, they encourage elevators, fuel transfer, and other relevant applications. Archimedean screw pumps or single screw pumps are utilized for simple water movement such as stormwater pumping, sewage inlet pumps, move industrial wastewater, and drainage pumping.

Pros and Cons of Screw Pumps
Screw pumps give the highest flow rate of displacement pumps that making them a great choice for those who work with difficulty to put more effort to move liquids as fast as possible. Screw pumps are a good choice for two phases- gas and liquid mixtures. However, single screw pumps have the exception that they are not ideal for moving clean liquids at steady paces.

Moreover, the complexity of screw pumps as wastewater treatment comes with enhanced maintenance and shorter equipment as compared to other similar pumps.
