These streets I run

These streets I run
I ran them in the night
and I ran them in the light.
I ran when it was dry
and I ran them in the drizzle.
I do what others won’t
And I fight battles others don’t,
So that tomorrow I can dwell
In the places others can’t.
I don’t run because I’m fast
I don’t run because I’m brave
I run the race marked out for me
And let other people be.
I run because I’m frightened
And because I know my pain,
I know I must run faster
Than everything I fear.
I run against depression
I run against defeat.
I run to silence voices
in my spirit on repeat,
that say I am a victim,
that say my odds are low.
I run toward my potential
And my purpose and my goals.
