The Golf Club at Oxford Greens in Oxford, Connecticut.

The Golf Club at Oxford Greens is one of the top courses in Connecticut. Playing from 7,100 to 5,100 yards, this golf course with its excellent conditions will be a challenge for every golfer from any tee they choose. This Mark Mungeam designed course was opened in 2005 to the delight of golfers.

From the back tees, the course looks to be narrowed by the forest with fairways that are squeezed by the bunkering. An up-close look reveals that some of the fairways are pitched to one side. While the greens play firm fast, there are no easy shots at the OG. The greens will influence most golf shots as they are tiered, sloped and angled well to keep golfers from scoring easily.

Indeed, the length of the course plays a significant part in how demanding it is for golfers. The par 5s will test both the length and the accuracy of players. There are no easy birdies here. This also includes the nastiest par 5 in the state of Connecticut. #OG3 was voted on by the Connecticut Golf Association golf community as the toughest hole in Connecticut. This par 5 could have easily been a par 6 or 7 depending on who you talk to about the third hole.

The natural beauty of the surrounding Naugatuck forest does not allow for much forgiveness from off-line shots. With there being little water on the course and every hole feeling isolated from population, the wooded forest is the major menace to wayward shots. The bunkering is the forest’s annoying tag-along buddy who is not easily avoided and comes into play from every tee box.

The course plays so long that If you play the back tees, you will regularly be walking out of the way just to get to the back tees. For the forward tees, it is more of a walkable course that will not have your game wilt from long climbs or walks between golf holes. The course does spread wide and far from the clubhouse, only barely passing the parking lot as golfers make their way from the 9th to the 10th.

Conditions were superb. Bunkers are or were being redone on some holes, but their website states that the work is complete. The greens were speedy and may frighten simple chips away from the hole, sending them scampering off the short grass. Challenging par 3s, long par 4s, and legit three-shotters make this course feel a bit daunting. When playing a course that is built near a housing development, it will typically feel like the houses were given priority. This course moves through the forest like the course was built before the housing was put into place.

This is a splendidly conditioned bent grass golf course with houses surrounding the course. There is a bit of water and natural features that add to the beauty of the course. Golfers will remember how grueling this course plays, especially if they miss shots or find the awkward spots to play from on or near the greens.

The prices are tiered. In the early morning weekend, golfers will pay $79, with a twilight rate of $49. If you can golf during a weekday, the price ranges from $55 in the morning to $39 in the evening.
