This is my favorite album from Alicia Keys it was also my first album that I bought. I remember it so clearly. It was the summer before 9/11. We just took our first trip to the US. I was a kid so it was Disneyland, Hollywood and of course the Big Apple (where Alicia is from). Here are some fun facts about this album.
- It was released in June 2001 but was actually recorded and submitted in 1998. Columbia records rejected it leading to a dispute with the label. Clive Davis bought Alicia out of her contract with them and she released it under J Records.
- Alicia wrote, arranged, and produced majority of the album herself at the age of 18.
- It sold 236,000 copied in the first week.
- “How Come You Don’t Call Me” is originally by Prince and “Never Felt this Way" is by Brian McKnight.
- Jermaine Dupri was a main producer and even features some vocals.
- The album went on to win 5 Grammy awards at the 2002 installment of the show. Making her the second Female Solo artist to achieve this.
- The only song that was performed in A minor is Jane Doe 😉
