No Man’s Log #002 100816b

After my break I felt galvanised to get the Heridium I needed to escape Winkle. So I purposefully marched away from the ship and promptly fell down a hole into a cave system that I have apparently been sitting on top of the whole time.

It was a nice looking cave though, so there is that.

Rather than using my jetpack (hey, I have a jetpack!) to try and fly out of the cave I decided to look around. The cave was rich with iron deposits and multiple resources I can use as fuel. Sadly Heridium was not to be found. After wandering around in the cave for what seemed like hours. I emerged from a natural opening. Before me was more of the yellowy green plains that make up Winkle’s surface. This time however there were several large floating rocks in the vicinity along with a Heridium deposit!

Winkle is a stange place

I examined the floating rocks first. It turns out they are copper deposits. I do not know why copper deposits float on Winkle and I doubt I ever will. Either way I grabbed some copper and headed to the Heridium deposit. Which as it turns out was the large rock I saw in the distance from the ship.

Heridium!

I got to work mining the Heridium for what I needed then headed back to the ship with a gleeful skip in my step. I have no real idea where I am or why I am here but the thought of using the ship to explore was exhilarating. I say was because it turns out I need separate fuel for the Pulse Engines, Thamium9 to be precise. Fearing that I had another expedition ahead of me I slowed down my pace for walking back to the ship. It was here the Winkle showed more of its unique diversity. I found a plant that you can extract Thamium9 from. Naturally I called it Fuel Rods incase I need to come back to Winkle for more at a later date.

After refueling the Pulse Engines I decided to play it safe and just use the ship to fly to the settlement I spied earlier. When I reached the settlement I found it abandoned but rich with resources, items and the odd curiosity. I decided to name it Rest Up Point. At Rest Up there is a beacon that I needed to craft a Bypass Chip to access.

The beacon turned out to be a signal scanner which I used to locate what it called an Alien Artefact. I did not get the chance to try out the other options on the scanner because each usage requires a separate Bypass Chip. Undeterred I explored the rest of the structures that make up Rest Up. Inside the main building I found a console that told me I was in a Gek Observatory. The console had received a transmission and all I needed to do was complete the sequence. You can imagine that this went really well for me and that I did not misunderstand what was going on at all and thus entering the wrong code into the console.

*sigh*

A lesson to remember if I encounter such a console again. In the Observatory there were also three doors that I couldn’t open or bypass. All of them required Atlas Passes. Which made me regret my decision to ignore Atlas’ help earlier once again.

Before I left Rest Up Point I realised I had enough resources to upgrade my Mining Laser as well as add Boltcaster functionality to my Multi-Tool. So now if needed I can deal some deadly force.

There was one last thing I wanted to do before leaving Winkle, I had to reach the Alien Artefact. So I hopped in the ship and flew over.

It’s pretty big for a Plaque!

Touching the plaque imbued me with the knowledge of the Legacy of Opyagmarest-Cebor and I head the following words spoken in my mind,

“We are the masters of galaxies, the overlords of the cosmos.
Each foe will submit with bended knee to the ALMIGHTY Gek Dominion.
We are the FIRST SPAWN. Look upon our works and DESPAIR”

I then learnt a word of the Gek language because that’s how things roll in this increasingly bizarre situation I find myself in.

The words trouble me though. It is clear that the Gek Dominion was or is an empire of sorts that has already charted this planet and left its ominous mark. I hope I do not have to meet them anytime soon.

On a somewhat down note I climbed into the ship which I guess is my ship now and headed off into space. Yes SPACE!

Wondrous!

It was here that my computer updated me and said that my next move should be to gather the resources to jump out of the system. Yet another task in the ever growing list of things to do. I decided to head to the nearest neighbouring planet to put the newly fixed Pulse Engines through their paces. I soon reached the planet Ifjorordurus so named because I accidentally uploaded this name instead of one of my own choosing to whatever network my computer connects to.

On nearing the planet I saw two large container ships. Thinking I had finally found intelligent live I raced over to one of them but quickly found I have no way to hail them or communicate in any way. That or the container ships could be abandoned. I was cautious and left them alone. Instead heading to a beacon that my ship had picked up the signal for down on the surface of Ifjorordurus.

After learning some of the finer points of ship travel I landed next to the beacon. (The finer point being, it is quicker to travel around a planet from out of its atmosphere than from within) The beacon pointed me to a nearby outpost which is my next stop.

Hopefully nothing else weird will happen to me when I reach it…
