UX Case Study: The case study that landed me my first job.

Looking back on my UX journey so far, I had faced many doubts, fear and even felt a gist of an Imposter syndrome. Did not feel like I belong to this field of UX/UI Design. Getting a first job in UX is challenging, but with the help of this one particular case study I could stand out from the candidates looking to secure the same job as a Jr. UI/UX Designer.

With the help of my mentors and colleagues, I came up with this design for a Medical App: MedCare, this UX Case study had helped me land my first job in the field of UX/UI Design.

During the lockdown period in 2020, people were in need of oxygen tanks, hospital beds, medication, which was scarce during the pandemic. With this problem in mind I came up with this app design which can help people rent the required medical equipments for a set period of time at the best price possible. This app will also allow users to buy prescription medicines and even OTC medicines when required, with an option to locate the pharmacy which has the medicine in stock. The goal of this app was to sell medicines and sell/rent medical equipments online to generate revenue.

User Research

Initially, I conducted a survey involving over 50 individuals spanning diverse demographic backgrounds: age, location, profession, gender, etc. With the help of google forms, I sent questionnaires to the people who accepted to be a part of this research, answers were recorded on google forms, with which I successfully completed the design of MedCare App.

Problem Statement

After the research process, I can come to the conclusion that people needed more features in medical apps, need pharmacy locators if the medicines could not be delivered, rent equipments, and keep track of the medicines they consume.

Real time location of medicine delivery not available.
Option to rent medical equipments not available.
Keeping track of medicines is difficult.
Forget to take daily dose of medication.

Solution

Using this approach, I devised solutions aimed at enhancing the app’s success by addressing its pain points and providing effective remedies for them.

Order tracking of medicines once medicines are purchased.
Option to rent medical equipments needed as medical equipments are required for limited period of time.
Auto order medicines based on prescriptions.
Daily pill reminders can be set within the app.

User Persona

User personas enhance empathy and guide design decisions by representing the needs, behaviors, and goals of target users.

The following user persona was created from the data collected from 55 user tests. Based on this data the user needs, pain points, and user behaviour, complied into ONE singular user.

In this stage, I aimed to chart several essential features identified by participants in the user research. Likewise, a similar process was applied to the pain points, as seen in the image above.

Empathy Mapping

My next step included the competition and testing the competitions app with the research group, captured data on how the user behaves, user’s attitude towards the pain points, understanding the true problems and formulating an empathy map. What the user: says, thinks, does and feels about the current process.

Information Architecture

Constructed was an information architecture encompassing a navigation diagram, an information flow within the application — starting from the initial step to task completion. Correspondingly, a user flow was generated, outlining the most efficient steps for users to accomplish specific tasks. This approach was applied to the task of renting a medical bed.

Low Fidelity Wireframe

Low fidelity wireframes were made based on the Information architecture, user testing was conducted with 5 users.

High Fidelity Screens

With the above information, the user research, information architecture and many iterations in the screen’s paper sketch, user testing the screens to make sure the process is easy to understand the high fidelity visual design for the app was designed. During my interview, I showcased this very case study, which effectively highlighted my design process, adept problem-solving, and proficiency in conveying intricate concepts with precision. This case study not only spotlighted my strengths but also played a pivotal role in securing my inaugural role as a Jr.UX/UI Designer.
