Table Scraps Should Be a Thing of the Past.

Read that again.
That’s an astonishing amount of food being thrown out. Want another crazy fact? The EPA estimates that a typical American family spends $1,600 on food that they never eat. $1,600 in the trash. Just take a minute to think about your own eating habits — honestly, how much food do you end up throwing out at the end of a meal, maybe without even realizing you’re doing it? For me personally, it’s more than I care to admit.
I’m not trying to make everyone feel bad about themselves. I think we get enough of that from watching the news. But it’s a pretty staggering number, and some of the solutions that we’ve all heard over the years aren’t really working. I mean, let’s face it, composting is a pain in the ass. And the way our civil works are set up means that throwing something away is just a lot easier than figuring out what to do with the “overflow” of food.
First and foremost, if you’re a part of this problem, let’s take a second and say some thanks for our bounty.
Now, let’s see if we can’t keep some of that bounty off the table to begin with. This is where the introduction of mobile technology into the world of food, and specifically shopping for groceries, can make a big difference. At the end of the day, we’re all pretty much creatures of habit. We eat a lot of the same foods over and over, because it’s what we like, what we know how to make, what’s easy, what’s cheap, there are any number of reasons. So each time we go to the store, we buy more of it because we think we need it when maybe we don’t. By keeping careful track of what we eat and how, along with all the stuff that we may already have access to at home, it’s not a far cry to conclude that we could very quickly start to reduce how much of our food goes to waste. The technology is there to do this for us, to make that experience as simple as possible.

Each time you don’t buy something because you realize you don’t need it, or you have a clearer understanding of whether or not it went to waste the last time you bought it, that’s less food wasted and more money saved.
