This is why I cling so desperately to freelancing. Because I see any trappings of security as more dangerous than the raw terror of no security. Better to be constantly anxious and accepting of a life of perpetual insecurity than seduced by the lie of security that is then snatched away, leaving me completely unprepared for and unfamiliar with the truth behind it — that nothing is for sure, no income is reliable, and all I have is myself, my brain and my body to carry me through.
