Even without the additional context of your previous conversations about leadership, I see problems with that particular question. It is important to know motivations, but you could ask exactly that: “Great. Why would you like to become a manager? Let’s see what strengths we can build.”
Going straight to dismissing the pay rise motivation implies that he expected this was the “real” reason up front, which would be pretty insulting to anyone who had a different motivation.
