A TOKEN AND A CRYPTOCURRENCY: What’s the difference?

As the cryptocurrency market evolves, we continue to see new terms and new ways of doing things. A lot of terms that are used in the current market were not in existence when Bitcoin was created in 2019. Today, the market has reached a point where an agreed definition of terms has been established. Saying this, they are still some terms which most crypto enthusiasts use interchangeably. One of these are the terms: Token and Cryptocurrency.
Often used as a substitute for each other, one is tempted to ask some key questions about these terms.

What is the difference between a Token and a cryptocurrency? Are they the same thing? Or are they different?

Theoretically, the term “token” is just a substitute word for “cryptocurrency”. But in recent years the word token has taken on a new meaning. Firstly, it is used to describe all cryptocurrencies apart from Bitcoin and Ethereum — even though they are technically also tokens.

Secondly, tokens can also be used to describe certain digital assets that run on top of a blockchain owned by another cryptocurrency. And like cryptocurrency, they can all also be traded or held as an asset.

Tokens can represent an investor’s share in a company or they can serve an economic purpose, just like a medium of exchange. This means token holders can use them to make purchases or they can trade tokens just like other tradable assets or currencies to make a profit.
