What’s Your Reputation?
For the most part, being successful in your craft is determined by the extent to which you produce extraordinary results.
However, the very nature of being an employee means that you have to rely on your seniors to present you with opportunities to flourish — working on important projects, leading teams, overseas travel, etc.
Yet, these opportunities will not simply land on your lap. You have to earn them by building a reputation that is impossible to ignore.
For this to happen, you must be willing to:
- Jump in at the deep end by taking on projects that scare you — trust that your learning will come from doing rather than waiting for the “right time.”
- Stay humble throughout your successes, especially the early ones — wholesome first impressions create long-lasting trust between the company and yourself.
- Keep on delivering, week after week, month after month — stay consistent and never rest on your laurels. Remember, no matter how well you did last week, you can always better it today.
The Silent Leader
Once you can integrate steps 1, 2 and 3 into your every day work ethic, you will become the example of success to your peers. Your method of working will be the benchmark for achieving outstanding results.
This is important for the following reason — when you are known for consistently delivering an exceptional level of work, you will become the go-to person in your company.
Don’t worry, though. This doesn’t mean that you will suddenly be responsible for an entire team overnight. The silent leader is the one who leads by example, not by their title.
In my opinion, this type of leader is far more admirable.
When you reach such a level, it’s important to stick to the values and principles that have served you well to date. At times, you may be pressured into doing otherwise but you must remain confident in your methods.
If you don’t, everything you’ve worked so hard for will be of little value.
