That’s the myth.
Yes, some “ outsiders,” often from the government, come into your lives and offer things such as health care or education. You don’t have to take it if you don’t want it.
The other truth is that generations of poverty and hard times too often lead to domestic violence, addictions and depression. Lets not glamorize the myth. Don’t drop all the blame on outsiders, unless you include the mine owners, mill owners and other big corporations who quickly moved out when the profits were gone.
I know more than a few people who left the holler and went to the university. After school they moved to Brooklyn. They go home now for holidays and to bring Mom some money.
