The Democrats believed that the changing demographics of the American population would help them, especially in Presidential elections. But there were several factors that they were not able to overcome. First, Hillary Clinton was not attractive to enough of the “minority” voters who voted for Obama. Second, the Republicans, especially in swing states such as Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio were successful in finding way to keep minority voters from voting. Also, the Democrats underestimated the degree to which the change in the U.S. population has threatened the lower middle class White people. Obama is Black, and that was the basis of Trump’s first appeal. Hillary is a woman. That is a bridge too far for many of those same people. It still is.
