Such a good point. It is definitely more challenging to connect when a teen is just not ready to open up. The answer to your question may depend a lot on the individual situation. I find that counseling can definitely be helpful to engage both parents and teens to get more clarity. I would say starting with what a teen is telling you through their actions/interests can also help… eg: “I see that you are interested in ____ video game, tell me more about that…” etc. (a very teeny tiny example). Start small, go slow, and never give up on making opportunities for connection. The not giving up can be the hardest part sometimes….
