Probably partially because the birth rate in America is below replacement levels. If it were not for immigration the population of the United States would be decreasing. As affluence rises birth rates decrease. So the notion that Americans are bad for the environment by having a bunch of children is neither true nor something people generally accept as such as a factor in the decision.
