The Life of Soylent — Debriefing

Introduction:

I’ve always been up to date on stuff coming out of Silicon valley simply because its the lead for the future and there’s no better way to be up to date on the future then seeing it produced. On top of that, I’d always been especially keen on any new fitness developments as someone who had a specific interest in that field (and even completed internships based around advanced fitness programming). So when I first heard about Soylent, you could probably imagine my excitement. Soylent if you don’t know already is the “future of nutrition” startup coming out of Silicon valley. The concept is that this substance (oringially powder now a drink) is supposed to be a 100% meal replacement. This means everything from calories, fat, protein, carbs, everything you’d need from a good meal would be covered in one convenient simple drink. This idea automatically struck popularity as soon as it was released and although many meal replacements do exist already such as SlimFast, this drink exists to replace a full healthy meal more then help you lose weight. I waited and waited for the newer Soylent to release and finally out came 2.0, an all inclusive bottle which would be perfect for my experiment going forward. Now with the first box of Soylent 2.0 sitting on my kitchen table, there’s nothing left to do but dive in.

Purpose:

The purpose of my journey is fairly simple: to see if replacing all my food with Soylent leads to a safe and doable diet. There’s actually quite a few things I’d like to prove as I move forward. The first would be to if Soylent won’t lead to any deficiencies in my everyday health and wellness. Yes, I am aware that Soylent was not made for this purpose and even states on the box how its made to “replace any meal not every meal”. The second concern would be if its possible to actually lose weight and lose fat with a Soylent diet. The good thing with these bottles is that you have an exact number of calories, fat and carbs that will make caloric deficiencies easy to track.

The Diet:

Here’s my plan. Each Soylent bottle is 400 calories making my goal of a 800 calorie deficit from 2000 calories simple. I will have 3 Soylent bottles throughout the day and that’s all my nutrition. I’m allowing myself unlimited green tea and water throughout this diet to keep my stomach full and my body detoxed. My day will start with a black coffee at 8 am to not only get me going mentally but to jump start my metabolism. My first Soylent will come at 12 pm where it will serve as a sort of brunch. My second Soylent will at 4pm and will be considering my lunch. The third Soylent will be consumed at 8 pm being considered my dinner. I’m also allowing myself one fruit or vegetable between 8pm and 12pm as cravings are human and having the same taste for all day might actually kill me.

Updates:

I’ll be taking my weight every morning after going to the bathroom to maintain a constant. I’ll also measure my dimensions to calculate body fat to make sure I’m also dropping body fat and not just water or body essentials. I’ll be talking about my entire day on the Soylent, my bathroom patterns, my hunger etc.

Conclusion:

As a man who loves food and would go yo extremes for a good steak, leaving solid food will be no easy task. I’m trying to stay motivated through this blog and even my YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/therealsabih) and im hoping I can find some interesting things through it all. So without further procrastination:
