Why transmission might not transfuse.

(Communication and factors affecting it)

The activity of conveying information, simply put as communication, involves two parties, the sender and the receiver. As simple as it seems, there might be some factors that hinder the effectiveness of the information being conveyed.

can chatting, one of the oldest means of communication.

Understanding is needed for the receiver to fully assimilate what is being passed. Imagine I go to my favorite shoemaker and begin to give him a well rehearsed speech on how to make money from shoemaking. He will not make any meaning of it , unless I really up my sign language game and make use of gestures to explain what I mean, this time without words. As long as we are human, the ability to understand is innate notwithstanding any handicaps whatsoever as long as the right language or medium is used.

Applying language in our everyday relationship with friends and family, what comes to mind is the five kinds of love languages we stumbled upon in SS3. Just like my speech makes no meaning to my cobbler, words of affirmation will have no effect on someone who would appreciate gifts, acts of service will equally be useless to one who needs quality time or physical touch and in the end, the aim of communication is defeated. It is selfish however, to be too engrossed to notice how a message was received because the manner of reception helps to decipher if communication was effective or not.

No communication is complete without feedback! The sender needs to know if the receiver was able to decode the encoded message. Careful observation will do the trick but a report is necessary depending on the how formal the matter at hand is. It is dangerous to ignore this because a sender might go feeling satisfied without knowing the person didn’t understand. Still on the case of my cobbler, if I don’t observe carefully, I wouldn’t know he’s mute and deaf and therefore he did not understand my life changing message.

Environmental and emotional factors also affect communication. How and where is it passed? and under what set of conditions? It is impossible to market a highly lucrative business idea or a statement necklace to a woman whose child is sick with measles. She won’t even understand because her present condition deafens her to anything that will not cure her child.

Another factor that affects communication is Feed forward. Feed forward is a preset notion. The sender who has a preset notion about the receiver which might be negative, conveys the information/ message in a way he would not ordinarily do. Feedforward thrives in cases where gossip abounds and can have a negative effect on marketing too.

In conclusion, many disputes and malice that exist today is as a result of miscommunication. These can be avoided by taking out time to observe the receiver, this will guide the sender in choosing the best medium or language of communication. Although human beings can be difficult to deal with, a trend could be seen in their response to various issues. This receiver oriented communication can be achieved without spending so many years with people, like Hauwa, who has been a close pal for four years now, will always say to me; amuolam gi ka school. It could be as simple as noticing which supervisor likes questions and which does not, which friend prefers calls or text and so on. These things make daily life easier because communication itself is indispensable.
