Proposal Critique — Sree Harsha Bhavanasi — General Secretary, Social and Cultural
Link to the complete proposals:
Proposal 1: I propose to introduce the post of Media and Design Secretary under the Social and Cultural Committee of Secretary Technology Students’ Gymkhana.
Need: TSG events should get more publicity than they do. It will increase the visibility of our rich culture.
Implementation: Creation of a new secy post is feasible and if the responsibilities attached with it are more clearly expressed it may even get passed.
Impact: Having a separate office bearer to handle the circulation of details of various Social and cultural events would ensure better reporting. The idea of having live telecast or videos of Social-Cultural events is welcome but with events stretching over multiple days this becomes a mammoth task.
The institute already has two News bodies who provide complete coverage of GC/Open-IIT events. The proposal should have rather concentrated on the coverage of Inter-IIT events, something which the news bodies struggle to cover.
Overall, the proposal seeks to implement key ideas but these doesn’t merit the creation of a separate post.
Proposal 2: I propose to introduce DANCE CLASSES OPEN FOR ALL STUDENTS AND ORGANISATION OF WORKSHOPS.
Need: Students looking to acquire new soc-cult skills require proper coaching and training. This proposal aims to fill that gap but in a limited capacity.
Implementation: Getting dance teachers from Kolkata (as most people would want to learn western dancing) is an expensive idea and how much students will gain from this training is questionable. Also, the cost incurred by the students for such lessons will be quite high.
Impact: A section of students will be marginally benefited.
Proposal 3: I propose to introduce three events in Open IIT namely-Stand Up comedy, Graphic Design, Poetry Slam.
Need: Upcoming comics in the institute need a bigger platform than the few open mics that happen in one academic year. Graphic Design and Poetry Slam are part of the cultural meet, having them in GC will give our students a better ground for practice and increase our chances of winning.
Implementation: Introducing these events is highly feasible. The big glitch will be getting judges.
Impact: It will give students with the talent for the above-mentioned competitions a practice ground and will directly improve our chances of winning the cultural meet. But it does not talk about the training of interested students.
Proposal 4: I propose to take Social Events of Spring Fest to National Level during Nationwide Prelims (Hitch-Hike).
Need: Making the social face of SF more visible is a worthy goal.
Implementation: The schedule, duration, and funds are a constraint on adding more events to the list.
Impact: It will show SF as a truly Social and Cultural fest.
