Proposal 1: Introduction of Fresher’s award and top sports person in each sport. The proposal also aims at maintaining leader board through player of the month in each sport. It also aims at modifying criteria for the Alumni cup to include this leader board position.

Need — We welcome the idea of a Fresher’s award as it will provide motivation beyond the Freshers’ tournament. However, the player of the month (POTM) consists of 30% attendance and 70% monthly performance, which is subjective to the opinion of respective instructors. A rigid metric of attendance might not be the best indicator of the skill set a player possesses. The proposal includes taking into account this POTM with 20% weightage for the Alumni Cup. This seems counter-intuitive to the fact that Inter-hall and outstation performances account for 15% and 5% respectively when those are the events which are going to decide the achievements in the academic year.

Implementation — Since no extra resources, financially or otherwise are required for this, feasibility is not an issue.

Impact — Rewarding practice sessions of four months through POTM leading up to Inter-IIT is only going to get in the way of the Inter IIT players by lessening the amount of free space they have to use and undermines the contribution from performances in actual events. Nor does it provide any added motivation for year round participation.

Proposal 2: Conducting Post Graduates and Research Scholars’ sports week under the shade of Technology Students’ Gymkhana which will help to identify talented players.

Need — A sports week for research scholars was organised in December of last year unofficially. The candidate claims that PG/RS representation in sporting events is < 10% despite there being over 6000 students in the community. However, there’s little reason to believe that is because of a lack of opportunities or facilities available to them. They’re deeply immersed in their research activities, and free time is not as ubiquitous to them as it might be to the UG populace.

Implementation — Given that a women’s week has been conducted before, implementation doesn’t appear to be an issue. Nonetheless, it would require massive publicity to attain the desired participation levels.

Impact — If there’s no undue time burden on the PG/RS group of students that limits them from participating in the sports week, it would go a long way in redressing their concerns regarding equal access to opportunities.

Proposal 3: Initiating a Triathlon Event under Technology Students’ Gymkhana, which would be open to all the students of IIT Kharagpur.

Need — A breath of fresh air indeed. An interesting event, that surely will attract a better crowd than a 2.2 marathon.

Feasibility — Budget caters to a single dish: Trophy. Apparently, the menu is huge! The proposal never takes into account the budget involved with setting transitions areas, providing safety gears and performance apparel. And a major bump to the event will be the bumps on the road. The IIT KGP roads are not ideal for cycle races. Safety Rules and Regulations need proper formulation, whose mere mention is absent in the Proposal. The absence of Rules puts into light lack of groundwork and conviction in the candidate.

Impact — Being a novice idea, future seems promising for this event. A lot of students will participate, provided Logistics Department do the proper work.
