1. Open Mics and Open IIT Stand Up event

Need — There are weekly open mics on campus, and they’ve garnered quite some participation too. So far, they have been conducted very informally and have required a lot of efforts from the organisers’ part. If the gymkhana can take these sessions under its folds ensuring smooth conduct, it would be a huge boost to the budding stand up scene in KGP.

Feasibility — There should be no issues with holding an Open Mic 2 times per semester, but the success of the events relies heavily on the number of people who show up to watch. Open IIT events usually don’t attract much attention, and we’d recommend incorporating it into the GC as well.

Impact — It might improve the stand up comedy culture on campus and help KGP improve its position in the Inter IIT Soc-Cult meet. But we think the impact of two open mics per semester might be highly overstated.

2. Institute Music Room

Need — Yes, this has been in the pipeline for a long time. Female students not being allowed in male halls after a certain time and other such restrictions hamper practice sessions. Hall presidents not wanting to pay for instruments from hall budget is also an issue.

F — Procurement of estimated funds(close to 9.5 lakhs, as estimated by the candidate) at this stage looks challenging. Getting a room may not be as easy as proposed either. The candidate has not elaborated on conduction of music classes, maintenance of instruments if provided, room booking et.al, or how the music room will be available to the rest of the student community either.

I — Other than making it convenient for music societies and renegade musicians who don’t want to be affiliated either to hall or Gymkhana.

3. Online Events Open IIT

N — TLS already conducts poetry slams, and open mics are also organised on campus. There are already several events like Choreography, Drams by which halls spread social awareness. Moreover we live in one of the most progressive places in the country, and social awareness is not a big problem here.

F — This event can be organised easily, but ensuring participation in large numbers from the student community would be difficult. As it is not a GC event, it will get little love from the halls.

I — Open IIT events don’t get much enthusiasm or attention from students, as most KGPians don’t see value in some activity in something that is not contributing to GC points. There are so many other events where people use Photoshop, Illustrator and other tools. We see no reason why PG and RS students will volunteer to participate in this event, as mentioned in the proposal.
