PART 1 : The Story of Hud AS: A Prophet’s Struggle Against Arrogance
Prophet Hud AS came after the prophet Nuh AS. 70%of the quran is attributed to the prophets and their stories.
After Nuh AS and his people were saved, there was no more disbelievers , everyone was believing in God. Then after the flood, Nuh AS stayed in Judi , in Turkey (between syria and turkey)
Nuh’s descendants settled all over the world, including Yemen.
In Yemen, the Ad tribe was that of Hud and the Thamud tribe was that of Salih AS.
These two tribes were related and each spoke the Arabic language.
Hud and Ad tribe
Hud AS is mentioned several times in the quran. He was considered the brother of the Ad tribe.
“And to ʿAad [We sent] their brother Hūd.” [11:50]
Allah SWT indicates that Hud AS is the brother of the Ad because they are part of the same tribe, they are so close, related to them that Hud wasn’t a stranger to them.
The tribe of Ad resided in Al Ahqaf. Al Ahqaf is surrounded by mountains. The tribe was made up of strong, intelligent people.
Whenever Allah SWT sends a prophet, he makes sure that people know the prophet (before he officially becomes one), He SWT lets him grow up in the tribe and make himself known.
That way, as soon as the prophet transmitted the message, people didn’t have the excuse of saying ‘where does he come from, we don’t know him, maybe he’s ill’.
“Do you find it astonishing that a reminder should come to you from your Lord through one of your own so he may warn you?” [7:70]
The people of Ad
The people of Ad, were people who worshipped idols and they began to worship statues.
Hud AS was sent to remind them to worship only one God, to remind them of all the blessings God had given them. To remind them of all that they will lose just for worshipping statues.
He said, “O my people! Worship Allah. You have no god other than Him. You do nothing but fabricate lies ˹against Allah˺” [11:50]
Allah SWT mentioned in the quran how the people were advanced in technology, the tribe of Ad had power, the power of innovation and knowledge.
Because they had this sense of innovation, creativity, the tribe of Ad was arrogant, they triumphed over the world. they built palaces, huge ones, on the top of the mountains, to attribute them to people.Hud said :
˹Why˺ do you build a landmark on every high place in vanity,and construct castles, as if you are going to live forever,and act so viciously when you attack ˹others˺? [26:128–130]
Allah SWT gave them power and the army.
All the innovations that the people of Ad made were not for the good, but to commit atrocities, to manipulate, to segregate the rich from the poor. This is what we call capitalism today. The strongs consume the weaks
They hadn’t well being morality.
Punishment announcement
When Hud AS presented his message, they denied what he was saying, they rejected his warnings.
“They argued, “O Hûd! You have not given us any clear proof, and we will never abandon our gods upon your word, nor will we believe in you.”” [11:53]
Why they rejected ?
They were so affected by this passion for superiority: if they followed Hud AS, it meant that they were going to be equal to the poor. They used the excuse of transmission from the ancestors, that they had to respect their rank.
‘are you telling us to worship Allah and to let what our forefathers were worshipping?’
They laughed at Hud AS. They said he was foolish and that it didn’t matter what Hud wanted from them.
This did not stop Hud AS from reminding people to turn to Allah swt.
The people of Ad began to say ‘if you continue we will torture you’. Hud AS turned to Allah SWT and told him that no one wanted to follow him.
The messenger prayed, “My Lord! Help me, because they have denied ˹me˺.” [23:39]
Then Allah SWT told him that He was going to send the punishment.
Allah responded, “Soon they will be truly regretful.” [23:40]
