I had the pleasure of interviewing one of The Simple Good’s board member, Jessica Yen. Jessica grew up in small town -Carbondale. She is now living in Chicago and is a senior business analyst. Jessica is super adventurous, she is actively involved in circus aerials. She enjoys being part of TSG because it allows her to live with intention and to carry out meaningful work. Read Jessica’s interview below.

Where are you from and what brought you to Chicago? I was born and raised in the small southern Illinois town of Carbondale. I came to Chicago after receiving my Bachelors / Masters in Accounting from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and accepting an offer as an associate at Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

What is your professional background and what do you currently do for a living? I am currently a senior business analyst in Flight Operations at United Airlines. Specifically, I work in pilot crew resources where we plan pilot itineraries two months prior to operations. In my role, I identify cost efficiency opportunities in the planning process and assess the financial impact of proposed operational changes.

How do you connect to the arts? I am actively involved in circus aerials — flying trapeze and aerial hoop. It’s an outlet that allows me to express myself when I am verbally unable to do so.

What has it meant to you to be a member of The Simple Good Board? Over the last few years, I’ve realized that there’s more to life than just ‘checking the boxes.’ My involvement with the TSG board allows me to live with intention and to carry out meaningful work.

What impact have you seen being made by The Simple Good? My favorite story from the The Simple Good is one in which a young man at Madero Middle School had been headed down the wrong life path — gang involvement — but stopped associating himself with negative influences after finding positivity in the TSG programming.

What does ‘the simple good’ mean to you? The simple good to me is bonding, building relationships, and learning to understand others.
