The Sky View Inn: A Storied Legacy in the Heart of Skyforest

5 min readApr 24, 2025

Tucked away in the tranquil mountain community of Skyforest, California, The Sky View Inn stands not only as a welcoming haven for visitors, but also as a monument to over eight decades of rich history, architectural charm, and community spirit. This iconic property, once a private residence, has transformed over the years — serving as a retreat, an inn, a wellness facility, and now, a restored boutique destination dedicated to preserving its storied past.

The Sky View Inn Originally The Fouch Residence

Origins: A Private Mountain Retreat with Architectural Distinction

The origins of The Sky View Inn date back to 1939, when it was built as a 9,000-square-foot private estate by Dorey Fouch for his bride, Mabel Fouch. Designed in a distinctive alpine style, the estate reflected the aesthetic influences of the nearby Lake Arrowhead Village, a project that Fouch himself contributed to. His vision incorporated charming architectural features such as heart-carved shutters, pitched dormers, and a whimsical gingerbread style that has captivated generations of guests.

An adjoining 1,200-square-foot cabin, constructed in 1938 with hand-hewn barn shake siding, served as the honeymoon suite during the completion of the main home. This cabin, known affectionately as “River View” for its views of the Santa Ana River, would later become one of the inn’s most beloved accommodations. The foundation of the cabin was constructed by Henck Construction, a well-regarded local firm tied to Skyforest’s early development.

The Storybook Inn

Transition to the Storybook Inn

Following its early years as a private residence, the property entered a new phase of life as the Storybook Inn. A boutique bed and breakfast, the inn quickly became a sanctuary for those seeking respite from the city. With nine private guest suites, the inn offered personalized comfort amid charming décor that included antique furniture, custom woodwork, and solariums with sweeping valley views.

Each room was thoughtfully designed, with some featuring private glass-enclosed porches, plush carpeting, and elegant mahogany paneling. Guests enjoyed continental breakfasts, with options such as fresh muffins, seasonal fruits, and locally sourced pastries. Prices ranged from $60 to $125 per night, offering a luxury mountain experience that was both accessible and memorable.

The inn quickly became known not only for its picturesque views — spanning from Mt. San Jacinto to Catalina Island — but also for its role as a social hub where locals gathered to listen to music, share stories, and celebrate life in the mountains. It was officially recognized as Cultural Landmark #4 due to its unique architectural features, community significance, and contribution to the historical landscape of the Rim of the World Highway.

The inn’s builder, Dorey Fouch, left a lasting mark through his careful design. One of the original Lake Arrowhead Village gas lamps, converted to electricity, remains on display at the inn today. The structure was further enhanced in 1999 with the installation of a multi-colored, slate-style roof using eight distinct tile colors arranged irregularly — an aesthetic decision that added to the building’s unique visual appeal and long-term durability.

Restoration and Repurposing: A Period of Transformation

As with many historic properties, the Storybook Inn underwent several transitions. For a time, it was repurposed as a rehabilitation facility. Although the building’s purpose changed, its character and architectural integrity remained largely intact.

Eventually, new stewards took ownership of the property and began the careful process of restoring it to its former glory as a boutique inn. Rebranded as the Sky Forest Inn, this phase saw further updates and respectful renovations. The inn’s original staircase, wood paneling made of blonde mahogany, and decorative sconces were preserved, along with a stained glass window in the kitchen depicting Disney’s “Bambi” — a nod to the mid-century charm of the property.

The west wing, once the personal design studio of Dorey Fouch, was reopened as a guest suite. A brick patio was constructed using native stone, shaded by a magnificent 300-year-old oak tree that still stands sentinel at the front of the property. Additional solarium spaces and a leaded glass unicorn windowed door further accentuated the inn’s fairytale ambiance.

A New Chapter: The Sky View Inn

Today, the property has entered a new era under the name The Sky View Inn (2021). This reimagined identity honors its past while embracing the future. Guests are invited to explore its history, stroll through grounds graced by ancient oaks and Ponderosa pines, and experience the legacy of those who built, restored, and preserved this remarkable destination. Whether visiting for a weekend getaway, a wedding, or simply to enjoy the view, each guest becomes part of a continuing story nearly a century in the making.
