Greetings from The Slowdown.

We’re writing to let you know that we’ve produced a special episode of our Time Sensitive podcast this week in which Andrew interviews Spencer about an event that changed the course of his life — and many others’ lives — forever.

Thirty years ago, on July 19, 1989, the tail engine of United Airlines Flight 232, a DC-10 carrying 296 people from Denver to Chicago, exploded above the cornfields of Iowa.

Spencer, then age 3, was on that plane with his 36-year-old mom, Francie, and 6-year-old brother Brandon. Upon making contact with a runway in Sioux City, the plane crashed. One hundred eleven people, including Francie, died. One hundred eighty five, including Spencer and Brandon, survived.

On the episode, Spencer opens up about the crash and its aftermath.

This interview is the first of what will be the occasional “special episode,” in which we look at a specific extraordinary, life-altering moment in time and extrapolate it through conversation.

Thanks for listening,

Spencer Bailey and Andrew Zuckerman
