The military could, and probably did, blame the pilots for crashing their planes. Some of them probably never flew again. And again, these pilots were highly trained and highly vetted professionals. They were picked based on intelligence, reflexes, etc and spent years training. They weren’t lazy, or dumb or untrained. The problem was in the controls and how the human brain screws up when it experiences scarcity. The same thing happened to Steve Harvey. He gets the blame (someone’s gotta get it!) and he’s the one that looks stupid but if you’re producing next year’s pageant, you’re gonna make sure the host doesn’t have an opportunity to screw it up. Maybe next year there is no card.
