Take A Break

It’s Okay To Rest

We live in a workaholic culture.

We do.

Admit it.

Each one of us works a ton and you probably have your hand in 5 different pots. I know that at any one time, I am working on a few different things.

  1. My Job. 9–5 I’m a Director of Student Ministries and love it.
  2. Podcast. I’m running two podcasts currently. One of them is weekly and the other is weekly as possible because it is with me and a co-host and sometimes schedules don’t line up.
  3. The Blog. I release weekly content and sometimes I do an extra post like this one.
  4. Future projects. I’ve got tons of ideas in the pipeline that I’m working towards making them a reality.
  5. Graduate Studies. I’m striving towards that Masters Degree.

My week is jam-packed, and on top of that, I do my best to make time for friends and family. However, this morning, I was exhausted. I woke up and felt like I couldn’t do anything else. So you know what I did? Instead of getting up at 6 am like I normally do, I slept until 10. Then, I worked on some homework through lunch and then played video games for 3 hours. And I didn’t feel bad as I played in all honesty. Because I needed the time to relax. My body was tired, my mind was tired, I needed a break.

I think there is a good majority of us who feel the need to work, work, and work some more but think we forget that we need to take a break sometime and relax.

I believe that rest can energize us to go back to work.

I believe the fear that a lot of us have when it comes to this idea of rest, however, is that if we rest we are being lazy. Which, there are times when we can rest too much and that can lead to laziness. However, taking a few hours to yourself when you’ve been working hard the rest of the week is more than okay. It doesn’t make you lazy to take a few hours to do things that reenergize you. When we take that time to rest so we can go back to work often times we are more productive than we would have been if we had just been working on fumes.

So my challenge to you today is to take a break. Take some time to relax and do an activity that you love to do. Go to the movies, get dinner with a friend, play some video games for a while, read a book, listen to a podcast. Whatever it may be for you take some time and relax today or this weekend. Sabbath is a good thing. Take time for it. Relax. The work will be there tomorrow. Rest so you can go and do better work later! That’s what I’m going to do the rest of the night.
