I’m afraid that I might seem different,

From the version of me you initially met,

Like a fading star, once bright and brilliant,

Now lost in shadows, a silhouette.

Inception narrative:

The Earth is round.” is somehow a no-brainer declarative. Life is full of ups and downs, but the Earth is round. Let’s say you meet people and you are in the north (ups thingamajig in your life and things seem to be going well) or right (right things happening — a no-toughie side comment ikr) period. Then, you somehow got them hooked, amazed by that first brilliant presence of yours. Until one day, the world moves as inevitably as it does.

This change can prompt a fear — the fear that these people will eventually see the flaws and complexities that exist within us, the “real mess” that we could be. This fear of being exposed or seen in a less favorable light could reflect anxieties about vulnerability and the potential for negative judgment.

Thus, sometimes we wish: “On our darkest days, can’t they just close their eyes?” But then through this we come to understand that those people whose eyes remain wide open are sanctuaries where you can be free from the weight of perfection. They understand that much like the spherical Earth, life is intricate and full of twists — and turns. It demands empathy, resilience, and a willingness to embrace both the peaks and valleys. Surround yourself with people where you are no silhouette.

However, it’s important to recognize that while these individuals may offer sanctuary, they may not always be able to fill the voids we carry within ourselves, nor can we perpetually rely on external sources for illumination because they too, sometimes feel like a dead star. You yourself are still responsible for you. Feel the shine, feel the dim. It is lovely.

Word of the poem:

A silhouette refers to the dark, typically featureless outline or shape of an object, figure, or scene, often seen against a brighter background. It is characterized by its solid and usually black appearance, lacking fine details and internal characteristics due to being backlit or viewed from a side angle where the light source is blocked.
