Discover the New Paramore: A Guide to Emo Pop Punk Metal with Female Vocals
Are you a fan of rock music but prefer a more melodic sound with female vocals? If so, you might be interested in emo pop punk metal — a genre that combines elements of punk, pop, and metal with emotionally-charged lyrics and catchy melodies. In this post, we’ll explore some of the best new bands in this genre that will satisfy your craving for beautifully produced, professionally recorded music.
First, let’s talk about Paramore. The band’s early albums, such as “All We Know Is Falling” and “Riot!”, were known for their energetic, poppy sound and the powerful vocals of lead singer Hayley Williams. However, their later albums took a more indie direction, which may have left some fans disappointed. But fear not, as there are plenty of newer bands that could be considered the new Paramore.
Stand Atlantic
One such band is Stand Atlantic. This Australian trio features the strong vocals of lead singer Bonnie Fraser, who has been compared to Hayley Williams. Stand Atlantic’s music is characterized by catchy hooks, driving guitars, and lyrics that deal with issues such as mental health and self-discovery. Their album “Pink Elephant” is a must-listen for fans of emo pop punk metal.
Against the Current
Another band to check out is Against The Current. This New York-based group is fronted by Chrissy Costanza, whose powerful voice is a standout feature of their music. Against The Current’s sound combines pop sensibilities with rock and electronic elements, resulting in a unique and dynamic style. Their most recent album, “Past Lives”, features songs that are both uplifting and introspective.
RedHook
RedHook is an Australian band with a sound that combines emo, punk, and metal. Their music is characterized by driving rhythms, heavy guitars, and the powerful vocals of lead singer Emmy Mack. The band’s lyrics deal with topics such as mental health, self-empowerment, and social justice. Their EP “Bad Decisions” is a great starting point for getting into their music. RedHook’s new album “Postcard From a Living Hell” is set to release on April 21st, 2023, but it is already available on Spotify. I am absolutely blown away by the album’s sound production and the sheer power of its tracks. Additionally, the use of a sub male voice to sing some of the lyrics — similar to what Stand Atlantic does — adds a unique and intriguing element to the band’s already impressive sound.
Pinkshift
Another band to check out is the American trio Pinkshift. Their music is characterized by energetic guitars, driving rhythms, and the powerful vocals of lead singer Ashrita Kumar. Their debut EP “Saccharine” has been praised for its fresh and energetic take on emo pop punk with female vocals. They are a Baltimore-based pop-punk band with a love for Paramore and My Chemical Romance and made a triumphant return in summer 2022 with their first single for new label Hopeless Records. Titled “nothing (in my head),” the song is an infectious and high-energy track that showcases the band’s unique sound and style. It was chosen as the lead single for their new album Love Me Forever.
Yours Truly
Finally, we have Yours Truly — an Australian band fronted by Mikaila Delgado. Yours Truly’s music is characterized by infectious melodies, pop-punk sensibilities, and the powerful vocals of Delgado. Their debut album, “Self Care”, deals with themes such as self-acceptance and personal growth. Their music is sure to get stuck in your head and lift your spirits.
Wait a minute? That is a dude singing? 😄
In addition to the female-fronted bands, there are also a couple of male-led emo metal groups that have a distinctly boy band-esque sound with a melodic, girlish twist. These bands include Sleeping With Sirens, Point North and Led By Lanterns, both of which offer unique takes on emo pop punk with catchy pop hooks, soaring choruses, and lyrics that explore themes of self-discovery and mental health.
Sleeping With Sirens
One band that has been a leader in the emo pop punk scene for years is Sleeping with Sirens. Fronted by vocalist Kellin Quinn, the band blends emo, post-hardcore, and pop punk to create a sound that is both heavy and melodic. Quinn’s unique vocal range allows him to hit high notes that are reminiscent of female pop singers, giving the band’s sound a distinctly girlish twist. Sleeping with Sirens has released several acclaimed albums, including “How it feels to be lost”, “Gossip” and the latest “Complete Collapse”, which showcase their ability to craft memorable hooks and powerful choruses that stick in your head long after the music has ended.
Awaken I Am
Awaken I Am is another Australian band that incorporates melodic vocals with heavier instrumentals. I first thought this band also had a female vocalist especially on the album “Blind Love”. But they are actually fronted by lead singer Adam Douglas. Awaken I Am’s sound is characterized by soaring choruses, intricate guitar work, and thoughtful lyrics. Their most recent album, “The Beauty in Tragedy”, deals with themes such as loss and personal growth. When I first heard the intro of “Blind Love” by Awaken I Am, it immediately brought to mind the early sound of Paramore. The upbeat guitar riffs and melodic vocals of the song capture the essence of Paramore’s early emo pop punk style and showcase Awaken I Am’s ability to channel this sound while still creating something unique and fresh.
They faced a devastating tragedy in their home city of Brisbane in May of 2018. Just months after completing their first tour in the United States, guitarist Connor Verner-Oakley’s life was tragically cut short at the young age of 24. He was the victim of an intentionally reckless driver who took his life in a senseless act of violence. The loss of such a young and talented musician was deeply felt by the band and their fans, and serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of treasuring every moment.
They are currently working on their third LP!
Point North
Another band to check out is Point North, a California-based trio that combines emo, pop punk, and metal with a sound that can only be described as boy band-esque. While their lead singer is male, his vocal range allows him to hit high notes that are reminiscent of pop divas. Point North’s music is characterized by driving guitar riffs, catchy hooks, and lyrics that explore themes such as heartbreak and self-discovery. Their most recent album, “Brand New Vision”, is a must-listen for fans of emo pop punk with a poppy, girlish twist.
Led By Lanterns
Please also consider Led By Lanterns, a British group that mixes emo and metalcore with catchy pop hooks and harmonies. While their lead vocalist is also male, he has a voice that is comparable to female pop singers, with a range that allows him to hit high notes with ease. Led By Lanterns’ music is characterized by intricate guitar work, soaring choruses, and thoughtful lyrics that deal with themes such as mental health and self-discovery. Their debut album, “We Are Here”, is a great starting point for getting into their unique sound.
In conclusion, emo pop punk metal with female vocals is a genre that offers a unique and emotionally-charged listening experience. While Paramore may have moved on from their poppy sound, there are plenty of newer bands that are keeping the spirit of the genre alive. Stand Atlantic, Against The Current, RedHook, Awaken I Am, and Yours Truly are just a few of the many great bands to check out. Give them a listen and let their music inspire and empower you!
