Generations of Grace: Unique Gifts for Today’s Moms and Glam-mas

Back in the day, Mother’s Day used to be so simple. We may receive flowers, a card, possibly a handmade or a practical gift to display or use in our daily lives. And nothing says, “Happy Mother’s Day!” like a flowered muumuu. While these gifts were greatly appreciated, you really can do much better.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not too sure our mothers and grandmothers liked being gifted and wearing a muumuu…but we never knew how they felt because they accepted and wore those vibrant couture muumuus with pride. However, today’s moms are a different breed. Today’s moms are trailblazers, adventurers, and captainess’ of their own ships. Something that most of the moms of yesterday never got the chance to explore and live out.

Before I go “another further”, I’m definitely not here to minimize the contributions of our mothers and grandmothers. They were pioneers and innovators in their own right. My mom was a single parent raising two kids and putting us both through college. She created a career path for herself in the utility universe, she worked for the phone company. That paid her a comfortable salary that allowed us to be considered a “middle-class” family. My grandmother was a homemaker who created a lot from nothing. My granddad worked in the fields and took jobs at the cotton gin…but he was able to ink out a living that inspired my aunts and uncles to go on to college. Not my mom, she wasn’t about that college life…she wanted to work and earn a living after high school graduation. So yeah! Much love and props to our moms and grandmoms!

Now let’s fast forward to today’s fabulous moms and Glam-mas!

Sure, we adore our kids and grandkids, but we’re also making our mark in the world and, hopefully, inspiring our children to chase their dreams as well. All the while, we’re attempting to find that “work/life” balance we so desperately need to stay energized and motivated. We enjoy traveling to exotic places with our families. But some of us enjoy weekend getaways with our gal pals and letting our hair down by “respectfully” twerking to the hit songs of the day.

Don’t worry though, some of us still enjoy turning our homes into our sanctuaries. We love creating spaces where family and friends can come together and build memories to last a lifetime. We adore timeless pieces of décor that we may have brought home from our travels. We’ll sometimes pepper each room with vintage or modern accents to pull together just the right look and feel. And let’s not forget the heart of the home…our kitchens. It’s not just a place to whip up a quick meal. We enjoy summoning our ancestors as we cook meals that not only feed our bodies but nourish our souls.

You don’t need to tell today’s mom and Glam-mas to “get somewhere and sit down”. We practically invented “spa days”. If we don’t feel like driving to the neighborhood spa, we have plenty of potions and lotions to recreate that spa experience. We enjoy our daily workout routines to keep active and ready for the upcoming work week. We also try to realign our body, mind and spirit through meditation or quiet moments of reflection.

Lastly, today’s moms and Glam-mas aren’t afraid of technology. Many of us have mastered the tech game…with the help of our kids and grandkids (wink, wink). We have smart phones, homes, and cars, along with all the other latest gadgets and devices that we can no longer live without. Once we got onboard, there’s no turning back…we intend to stay ahead of the technology curve.
