According to many parents, internet, more specifically social media is still the “big, bad wolf” in this urban jungle. And for the most part, we agree. Sitting in the classroom and posting “Yawn!” on Facebook while the professor is staring pointedly at the other direction trying to ignore these below-the-bench activities is seriously not cool. But just like everything worthwhile in this world, social media is multifaceted, it has its pros and cons. Social media has opened up countless new venues for us, it has revolutionized many industires and eventually it has pervaded our education system. The infographic below will give you an idea of the impact of social media on education.

Bear with me while I share a personal experience. One of the reputed and brilliant professors of my university uses Facebook to share notes and snippets with us, and that includes articles and clips which are crucial for our research work but are impossible to share in a classroom. Personally social media has done more good than harm when i consider what it has done for higher education. But for teenagers who haven’t yet understood the whole point of it, it’s better if parents keep a close tab on their online activities. It doesn’t mean that they should spy on them, it’s just a matter of pointing out the dark sides of social media and how to utilize it for good.
