Even if She Turns Stubborn and Unkind

It’s a reverse process. Every day my Mom becomes more like a young teen. At times it’s quite cute, at other times the little one in front of us is more like one of the nasty kids on the block.

Dementia is leading her into forgetting a lot of daily essentials she has learned in her adult years. And not entirely to the joy of her direct environment, the illness has also rid her of a lot of the pretense and false niceness society usually encourages us to embrace.

She becomes what, deep down, we all are: raw and authentic…

Bali’s beaches have a lot to offer these days. Spare sandals, water bottles, juice cartons, leftovers from snacks, lots of straws and plastic bags. Plus the skeleton of a trolley case as an unexpected extra on the day of writing.

Rainy season is garbage season in paradise. The massive monsoon rains and their tides gift the shores of the paradise isle with an extra load of trash. It is coming down the many river valleys and from neighboring islands.
