Hard work does not always work

Sometimes luck does (and vice versa)

The cold truth of life is that you cannot control it no matter how hard you try. Our lives have a strange flow to them that is generally dictated by the internal factors of our emotions but external forces are always prevalent.

Our minds are the neurological hubs of our bodies. It is truly fascinating what your mind is capable of doing and how it does it is even crazier. The passion we find, the drive we have and the way we utilize our drive and passion are all processed in these minds of ours. How our minds process passion and drive is something too philosophical for me to understand. That’s truly beside the point, however.

This passion and drive created by our mind is what makes us work the way we do. Our drive to do something well will push us to working hard so that you can reach a place of satisfaction. Ironically, one’s passion is what creates this expectation of the place of satisfaction but the passion pushes the place of satisfaction further ahead as one gets closer to this.

Predominately, the human species is often rewarded for the hard work they put in and generally this is seen towards a passion of theirs. One can only truly see what hard work is if it is meet corresponding with a drive. Drive towards achievement is reflected often in success that people earn.

But, your drive may not be enough.

Our lives need two things to be truly successful: drive and luck. Either one of these is not enough to make us successful without the other.

Sometimes, you have to remember your luck with not always side you regardless of your drive. This is what happened to me many times.

A few times I can list is:

  • DECA Provincials
  • IB Admissions (Grade 8)
  • SciTech Admissions (Grade 5)

These were all times where I failed to get something I believe I truly deserved. Yes, it may be true that one can argue that others may have put more effort than me. Well, this can’t apply all the times knowing the conditions and stories of effort put in by others. My luck truly did not side me.

Nonetheless, you take these failures and make them into a lesson. These lessons give me more drive than before. Accumulation of more drive will only make the odds more into my favours than before and that truly is priceless.

This weekend I actually went to a leadership conference known as START. At this event, I got to listen to the story of a very dedicated man whose luck did not always side him. His name is John River. The story he told me is a story that takes pure dedication and learning from your failures rather than letting them push you down. Out of the 7 billion people in this world, the thing that truly distinguishes you is your determination as there are 7 billion possible people competing with you. The people that are determined more are more likely to be successful and those are the true winners.

The reader only needs to take away one thing from this: you can fail regardless of the amount of effort you put in, but that should never stop you from doing better the next time.
