Countdown to Oscar® Sunday and Major-League Hollywood Parties

If you’re looking forward to the Oscars®, you are not alone. Fans this year can expect something different than the same old song and dance. After all, the darling of stage and screen Neil Patrick Harris is hosting this blessed event, and many others are hosting out-of-this-world parties. Seriously, what’s more important, the awards or the parties? Uh-huh. I thought so. However, several of Hollywood’s most famous parties do a great job of combining both.

Before covering Oscar® contenders, let’s touch on the incredible party lineup. First, there’s The Night of 100 Stars, an Oscar® viewing party complete with dinner and drinks. One hundred stars is putting it lightly. There are stars EVERYWHERE at this storied Hollywood event. There are stars from TV and movies along with plenty of glitterati. How about the Fondas, Jon Hamm, Patti Labelle, Tony Shalhoub and Jon Voight? It’s a gathering of true Hollywood royalty and maybe a few weirdoes (cough — William Shatner — cough) and practically the whole cast of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” okay just Jeff Garlin, in a relaxed and glamorous setting.

If you’re into the concept of watching the award show while partying, there’s another superb option: Elton John’s Oscar® party. This mega-popular West Hollywood event attracts an endless list of stars that includes everyone from Harrison Ford and Sharon Stone to John Waters, Lady Gaga, Heidi Klum and new-generation dazzlers like Kate Beckinsale and bend it like Victoria Beckham. For some do-gooders, the attraction of Elton John’s annual Oscar® party isn’t the party at all, but rather the opportunity to have a tiny bit of fun while supporting a good cause. Like many of Elton John’s other events, this par-tay benefits the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has given oodles and oodles of money to fund HIV/AIDS research and treatments. This annual event typically generates $5 to $6 million in charitable donations.

These hearty parties are the meat in an awesome Oscar® sandwich. Where’s the bread you say? The Weinsteins have it. They don’t just have one party. Oh no, that would be way too modest for the dynamic Weinstein brothers. They have a glamorous, totally amazing Oscar® pre-party. There’s a brief break for the formality of the award ceremony, which is taking place on February 22, 2015, by the way. Then, they take the parting up about four levels for an all-out Oscar® after-party. It’s a great time to mingle, sip champagne and enjoy catered canapés whilst sharing hangover remedies with the celebrities. What could be better?

While Neil Patrick Harris’s hosting isn’t entirely new for him, it will be different than the Ellen DeGeneres of last year, Seth McFarlane and the dynamic infamous Hathaway-Franco duo that everyone’s still trying to forget. His hosting also creates an interesting problem. What if “Gone Girl” were to win? Holy smokes! Then he’d really be singing and dancing all over that stage, but after the chilly reception that the film received at a screening for Academy panelists, the Hindi film “Liar’s Dice,” a film festival darling, has a better chance of winning. And the odds of India’s music maestro A.R. Rahman winning for one of his contending songs are way better. Even the best critics have trouble predicting who will claim a little man trophy, so this tricky job of divining the winners of the 87th Oscars® is best left to other award shows, more specifically, the Golden Globes®. By the way, if you’re going to one of these fantastic parties and purchasing your party tickets from VIP Concierge, what will you wear? It’s just something to think about.
