6lack(pronounced “Black”) is an up-and-coming hip-hop artist hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. His debut studio album, Free 6lack, known for its iconic album cover shown above, peaked at number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified platinum.

Beyond making great music, 6lack’s social media awareness and humility make him one of the more interesting artists to study when it comes to branding.

His second studio album, named East Atlanta Loved Letter, is slated for a September 14 release. Far from a standard promoter, 6lack sent out personalized cards to his fans that pre-ordered the album, showing an example of how a bit of personalization can foster a rabid fanbase.

The style of music that 6lack puts out is intimate, personal, and introspective, and he brilliantly matched that style with his promotion leading up to his album.

The modern rap ecosphere, full of braggarts and frivolous spenders, could use a healthy dose of humility and fostering of intimate relationships. A picture is worth a thousand words.

The lesson here: a rabid, loyal fanbase can do a lot of the legwork of promotion for you.

Rap Game, take note.
