Great design shouldn’t be just for companies with big pockets

Every business has a direct impact on their local community — no matter how big or small. The work small companies do, really matters. Shouldn’t their brands reflect that? Well, it’s not easy to compete with the big players when their brand doesn’t look professional enough.

It’s clear that most companies struggle with visibility. Their marketing is confusing, their brand doesn’t convey the right message and more often than not their promotion is badly designed. Even so, your brand shouldn’t look bad just because you don’t have the same resources big brands do.

Maybe you start by trying your luck with graphic design tools. Your precious time is escaping through your hands while you do something that’s NOT what you’re good at — unless you’re a professional designer, of course. But what if you’re not a designer? Well, the outcome will end up looking “not so professional”.

Time is money and since you really care about your business, at some point you will need to get professional help to make your brand look good.

And that’s when you start “shopping”

Even though you have many design needs, it’s probably not enough to justify hiring an in-house designer. In the UK, an average salary for a graphic designer is around £21,832 per year. It’s a serious overhead! You’d have to pay an annual salary, equipment, training, holidays/sick days off… not happening!

If you get quotes from design agencies, their price tag will almost make you give up. Not mentioning the time you’ll have to dedicate to briefings, meetings and follow-ups.

So what now?

The most viable option: freelancers.

Easy enough, right? Hmm… there are a few things you will find out about hiring freelance designers. Ask around and what you’ll hear is:

“Hiring freelancers is time-consuming, you have to go through lots of them to find a good fit. They can be unreliable, the output isn’t always great and they may not fit your culture. The most important thing is that they often work on too many projects at the same time, so you’re NEVER their priority. Not to mention the hourly rates and costs of revisions.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against freelancers. Heck, most of my best friends are freelance designers! The problem is with the design industry. It’s not fair to freelancers and it’s not right for businesses. And even though the system is not broken, it’s definitely not working.

But seeing that it’s your only option left, you gotta suck it up.

Or do you?

Is there an alternative?

If I walk into a Men’s Warehouse, I expect to get a nice suit at a decent price. If I walk into a bespoke tailor’s shop, I expect something else: a totally different experience AND price tag. But if I can get that personalised bespoke experience at an affordable price, that changes the game — It makes “high-end” accessible.

Entrepreneurs, small businesses, startups, content marketers, churches — people like you and me — with frequent graphic design needs are desperate for that. We all need a service offering professional design that won’t cost an arm and a leg. We’re crying out for a solution that makes us look good without all the hassle and all the “surprise” charges.

Can you imagine a world where small businesses get bespoke designs for prices that don’t break the bank? Where designers really care about you, your unique identity, and look after each and every aspect of your brand for you?

I can.

That’s why I started gathering a team of great designers that were willing to make a difference, to be an alternative and challenge the status quo.

Deer Designer was born to scratch my own itch. To make the “small” look “BIG”. To democratise bespoke design

We decided to be the best alternative and ensure that no startup, small business, or early-stage founder’s brands look bad due to lack of resources. And all for a fraction of the money agencies or freelancers would charge you.

Every company deserves to work with a professional designer that actually cares about their success and grows with their business. The principle is to end the unreliability: your Deer Designer is always available. You’re ALWAYS their priority.

You see, we’re not trying to disrupt the graphic design industry. Deer Designer isn’t that big, we’re just as small as you are. We’re an alternative for anyone tired of being let down by freelancers and in need of a better option. We believe in supporting small businesses’ growth and online presence by offering an affordable yet tailored design service.

It’s not for everyone, though

Large businesses, anyone looking for one-off design tasks or companies without a logo or brand identity won’t get the value out of the service. Anyone that would rather spend their time designing everything by themselves won’t be a good fit either.

This service model only works for people that really care about their growth but don’t have the resources to hire an agency or in-house designers for their frequent design needs.

That’s why we decided to fully refund anyone that decide we’re not a fit, no questions asked. All that matters is that they’re getting the value out of the service.

A few months back one of our customers requested designs for a big trade show: roll up banners, flyers, brochures, Twitter and Facebook ads, event programmes, the works. Freelancers and agencies quoted between $2,500 and $6,000 for the job.

She decided to try us first.

Her designer did the whole work in just over a week. She loved it so much she said:

“I can’t thank you enough! Even if I don’t send any request in the next 6 months, it’s still worth it! The designs are as professional as a design agency and cheaper than hiring freelancers. I love my designer. She’s always there when I need her and I don’t have to tell her what fonts, colours or images to use. I’m never going back to freelancers!”

We’re that dedicated to our customers. And we’re just getting started.

To quote JFK:

“We chose to do it not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard”

We know we won’t change the design industry overnight. But by positively impacting one small business at a time, we are already off to a great start. Care to join us?
