Mumbai in a Nutshell (for non-Indians) — Sightseeing

Since 2008 I was very often in Mumbai. I stopped counting after the 50th visit. The trips were mainly for work purposes, but I always spend some time for leisure.

In this blog series I want to share my insights and tips how to enjoy or survive this vibrant city.

Mumbai might not be the most famous city for sightseeing, but once you are there you can easily spend some days in visiting the famous places. As I spent several weekends in Mumbai I had the chance to do sightseeing. This is my list of the “Things to visit in Mumbai”. By the way, the next blog will be about beaches in Mumbai … Juhu and friends.

Landmarks

Gateway of India

• The Gateway of India in Mumbai is an iconic monument that reflects India’s cultural heritage and historical importance. This abstract highlights its architectural grandeur, historical significance, and enduring legacy. Built in Indo-Saracenic style, the Gateway of India is a harmonious blend of Hindu and Muslim influences. It witnessed significant events during India’s struggle for independence and continues to serve as a symbol of national pride. With its strategic waterfront location and breathtaking views, the Gateway of India remains a popular tourist attraction, captivating visitors with its timeless charm and cultural significance.
• Remarks: This is must see, but also very touristic. Be aware that you might get approached by a priest/guru for a Tilaka (Tika, Bindi) or bracelet. If you take it you’re expected to donate. There are also a lot of photographers with mobile printers. The ferries to Elephanta are leaving directly from the Gateway. You have a nice view from the gateway on the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace & Towers.

Dhobi Ghats

• Dhobi Ghats in Mumbai represent a unique cultural phenomenon showcasing the resilience of the city’s washermen community. • Remarks: You should stop at the bridge and have look on the big “washing machine”. There are always guides around which will you take down into the place and show you all the details. Please note that you can/should negotiate the price first.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (Victoria Terminus)

• Victoria Terminus in Mumbai, India, is a marvel of architectural grandeur and a vital transport hub. This abstract highlights its significance as an architectural masterpiece and a bustling center for transportation. The iconic structure, blending Victorian Gothic and Indian architectural styles, serves as a railway station connecting millions of commuters daily. Victoria Terminus stands as a symbol of Mumbai’s rich heritage and bustling urban life. Its intricate details, towering spires, and bustling platforms create a captivating fusion of history and modernity.
• Remarks: For me this is the architectural highlight of Mumbai and it holds true for the outside and inside. You can start a ride in a local train, but be aware that it might be very crowded and there are special compartments reserved for women. If you’re in the terminal you should visit one of the long-distance train platforms. From VT you can also walk to the Crawford Market.

Hanging Gardens

• The Hanging Gardens in Mumbai, India, offer a serene and picturesque retreat amidst the bustling cityscape. • Remarks: The residence of Mukesh Ambani the “Antilia” is visible form the Gardens and quite impressive. In addition you can spot the famous “Shoe”. Mumbai look very attractive from this place, especially Marine Drive and Narinam point area of south Mumbai. If you are interested in peacock feathers, you’ll be able to buy them here. You might get approached for money exchange from Euro coins to Rupees.

Bandra-Worli Sea Link

Its stunning design, engineering brilliance, and the seamless experience it offers have made it an iconic landmark and a symbol of Mumbai’s modern development. The Bandra-Worli Sea Link stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to infrastructure advancement and has become a source of pride for the people of Mumbai.
• Remarks: Depending on were you start the sightseeing tour you could have a ride over the bridge. Once you are on the Western Express Way, you can’t miss it. Please note that it’s not allowed to stop on the bridge to take pictures. For sure it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the Mumbai skyline.

Bandra Skywalk

• The Bandra Skywalk in Mumbai, India, serves as a vital pedestrian infrastructure, connecting the bustling suburb of Bandra with its railway station and prominent landmarks. The Bandra Skywalk not only enhances the connectivity within the neighborhood but also offers panoramic views of the surrounding areas, including the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
• Remarks: Walking on the Skywalk is easy without being disturbed by Mumbai traffic. It connects Bandra Station with Bandra Kurla Complex. Enjoy some interesting views as the skywalk is on top of abandoned rails and a slum at least once I was there.

• Remarks: Small museum where I typically spend around one hour.

Caves

Elephanta Caves/Island

• The Elephanta Caves in Mumbai, India, are a testament to ancient art and spirituality. This abstract highlights their historical significance, intricate sculptures, and profound spiritual ambiance. These rock-cut caves dedicated to Lord Shiva showcase exquisite craftsmanship and depict Hindu mythology. Visitors are immersed in a mystical atmosphere, connecting with the divine. The Elephanta Caves attract tourists seeking cultural enrichment and provide a window into India’s spiritual heritage.
• Remarks: You need to take a ferry ride to Elephanta Island. The ferry services are available near the Gateway of India. It takes approximate 1 hour to get to the island. On Elephanta you can easily stay 2 hours. So typically this trip takes half a day. The caves are very impressive and if you want you can get a guide. Be aware that you need to negotiate with the guides. Please note that this is a very crowded touristic place for Indians and foreigners!

Kanheri Caves

• The Kanheri Caves in Mumbai, India, offer a captivating journey into the depths of ancient Buddhist heritage. Located within the lush greenery of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the Kanheri Caves are a complex of rock-cut caves and monastic dwellings. Visitors can explore the intricate carvings, serene prayer halls, and vibrant stupas that showcase the artistry and spiritual essence of ancient India. • Remarks: I find these caves more impressive than Elephanta and typically it’s not as crowded as Elephant. At the entrance of the national park you can book a guide, but this is not mandatory and you’ll find the caves easily by following the signs (there are even busses running to get there). They also offer a Tiger Safari, but this I would not recommend. It’s not a Safari but few Tigers in a small cage. Best time to visit the caves is in the morning, as it can get quite hot later.

Religious Sites

Mahalaxmi Temple

• The Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai, India, is a revered sanctuary that radiates devotion and blessings. This abstract highlights the temple’s sacred significance and its role as a spiritual haven. • Remarks: You have to take off your shoes to get into the temple. There are shoe keepers at the entrance and if you have nice, new shoes it’s strongly recommend to invest some rupees. Once more you might need to negotiate a little as prices for foreigners can be quite high. In addition it’s not allowed to bring cameras into the temple, but you can easily deposit them at the entrance (free of charge).

Haji Ali Mosque

• The Haji Ali Mosque in Mumbai, India, stands as a revered spiritual icon amidst the Arabian Sea. Situated on a tiny islet off the coast, the mosque is accessible via a scenic causeway. It holds deep religious importance for Muslims and attracts visitors from all walks of life. Surrounded by the sea, the Haji Ali Mosque offers a unique spiritual experience, blending faith, tranquility, and breathtaking natural beauty.
• Remarks: You have to take care about tides. The causeway will be submerged during high tide and you won’t be able to get to the Mosque. On the causeway you’ll find street vendors, beggars, and disabled. For a few Rupees you can check your weight. Besides the Mosque the surrounding sea and the view on Mumbai is nice and some even take a bath. Be prepared to be part of selfies from Indian fellows. If it becomes too much, simply ask for money and it will stop. After visiting the mosque you might be thirsty, thus I recommend to have a nice juice at the famous Haji Ali Juice Center.

Banganga Tank

• Banganga Tank in Mumbai, India, is a serene oasis of spiritual significance. This abstract highlights its tranquil ambiance and cultural importance. • Remarks: You can walk around the tank and also have a look on the surrounding temples, but that’s mainly it. At least the scenery is nice and typically it’s not too crowded.

Mount Mary Cathedral — Bandra

• Remarks: In front of the church are a lot of food stalls and shops. I recommend to try pani puris (if you dare). You can also buy candles outside and light them later inside. On top you’ll have a very nice view on the Arabian Sea from the church. Please note that there is a fair in September and during this the place is very vibrant and crowded.

Colaba Causeway Street Market

You can walk around by yourself and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. If you want to see the Meat Market in action you need to come early (before 10:00 IST), but be aware that it’s quite special.

Chor Bazaar

• Remarks: This is not a touristic place, thus you can enjoy the real Indian experience. They offer a lot of antiques, but I’m not sure if it’s legal to export those to your home country. I strongly recommend to try a chai at one of the chai stalls.

Sassoon Docks Fish Market

• Remarks: Best time to visit is early morning. Sassoon Dock has always a certain fishy odour as they put the sea food on the street and not everything is put on ice. The smaller the prawns the less ice is used. You should put on old shoes because you might step into a muddy hole and you won’t be able to remove the smell.

Linking Road — Bandra

• Remarks: Walking along the promenade and enjoying the sculptures gives you the opportunity to relax a little from the hectic places in Mumbai. You can also have a look at the house “mannat” of bollywoods famous actor Shahrukh Khan. Be aware that this beach is not famous for taking a bath, but you can enjoy a nice coffee. My recommendation would be the Grounded Café (https://maps.app.goo.gl/7TeELB5PcLR4FGLu9), a little off beach, but worth visiting.

Juhu Beach

• Juhu, a bustling neighborhood in Mumbai, India, is known for its picturesque beach, vibrant street culture and a plethora of entertainment options. Chowpatty

• Located on Marine Drive in Mumbai, India, Chowpatty Beach is a popular seaside destination that offers a unique blend of relaxation, entertainment, and local flavors. Chowpatty is a vibrant public gathering place and a symbol of Mumbai’s coastal charm. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, the beach attracts locals and tourists alike, who flock to its shores to enjoy stunning sunsets, leisurely walks along the promenade and a variety of recreational activities. Chowpatty is also famous for its street food stalls, where visitors can enjoy an array of lip-smacking delicacies such as bhel puri, pav bhaji and ice golas. During the annual festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, Chowpatty comes alive with elaborate processions and immersion ceremonies, giving the beach a cultural and religious significance. A melting pot of Mumbai’s diverse cultures, Chowpatty Beach offers an unforgettable experience that showcases the city’s coastal beauty, culinary delights and vibrant spirit.

Aksa Beach

• Aksa Beach, located in the outskirts of Mumbai, India, is a hidden gem known for its tranquil shores, scenic beauty, and a respite from the bustling city life. Aksa Beach is a serene coastal getaway for locals and tourists seeking a peaceful retreat. With its expansive stretch of soft sand, clear blue waters, and surrounding greenery, Aksa Beach offers a picturesque setting where visitors can unwind, bask in the sun, and enjoy the soothing sounds of the ocean waves. The beach is relatively less crowded compared to other popular beaches in Mumbai, allowing for a more intimate and relaxed experience. Aksa Beach is ideal for long walks along the shoreline, picnics, or simply immersing oneself in the natural beauty of the surroundings. The beach also serves as a popular spot for photographers, capturing stunning sunset views and the coastal landscape. While the amenities may be limited, Aksa Beach’s peaceful ambiance and untouched charm make it a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. A visit to Aksa Beach offers an opportunity to reconnect with nature, recharge, and experience a different side of Mumbai’s coastal allure.
• Remarks: Aksa beach is on the outskirts of Mumbai and it takes a while to get there. On the way, you can take a pedal boat trip from the Chhota Kashmir Boat Club (see https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pw1drMW14tt7Bc3QA).
