World Coin - Privacy Threats and India’s Concern
World Coin, another venture of ChatGPT founder Sam Alton along with Max Novendstern and Alex Blania, is a digital identification platform that aims to provide each person on earth with a convenient way to verify that they are a real human and not a bot or an AI algorithm.
Concerns:
World coin fails to mention the biometric data it collects in exchange for a digital identity card and a crypto currency token.
They use an orb to get the IRIS scan of a person and give them identifying them as human. They claim it can be used when need to differentiate between AI and Humans.
Many questions arise?
1. The security of data. Who will have access to the data, what will have in case of a leak.
2. In what all ways it can be used, will World Coin be the global authority in future to determine who is Human and Who is a bot.
3. World coin wants to create a Monopolistic Market for largest Human Database.
Concern Over Iris Scan
Iris Scan is one of the safest biometric authentication methods till now and it is used in advanced security system. Having a database of Iris Scan can be used a key to any state of art lock system based on Iris Biometric authentication, raising quite a serious concern.
Why it is most concerning for India?
India is enriched in one thing for sure which is Human resource, about 17.76% of world’s population resides in India and it provides a huge playground for Worldcoin and Sam Alton.
It has a huge population which is still not very educated about digital security and in the name of free crypto currency World coin is saving their IRIS Scan.
IRIS scan of Indians is directly linked to their Aadhar card, which in turn is linked to their bank accounts, if leaked or passed on to wrong hands it can lead to social as well as economical damage. It is basically like giving away your social security number to World Coin if you are a US citizen.
Bans and investigation on World Coin
World coin is banned in Kenya, and it is under investigation in Germany France has questioned legality of World Coin.
U.S. citizens are not allowed to use, purchase or access WLD tokens at this time, according to the Worldcoin terms of service. The country that is supposed to be the first user and developer of any tech.
The question here is what checks India is doing against these security and privacy concerns raised by actions of WorldCoin, when India has most to lose with a huge Human resource base and Aadhar card — Iris Scan data of Indian.
Will Indian Government ban the WorldCoin or atleast do a proper investigation of the WorldCoin and its already existing Indian Database of Iris Scan before allowing it a full fledged open run in India?
