Brexit Was Not a Triumph of Democracy

The electorate, myself included, are constantly guilty of confirmation bias. We have been fed a diet of anti EU spin from politicians and the media for decades now that you simply cannot replace reinforced prejudices with facts and rational argument at the 11th hour.

The tabloids have made millions from spouting half truths and emotive, propagandist rhetoric. In a way I’m angry at them but in another, I can’t blame them – there’s is to sell, to make money. Only the BBC has any claim to a moral responsibility, because they’re a “public service” not a private company.

If you raise a child on sweets and chocolate, you can’t expect them to suddenly seek out broccoli. The public are used to half truths, to rhetoric, and we’ve become slavishly addicted to it and expect it.
