I’m really conflicted over this, but in general I don’t tip for counter service. I find tip culture to be gross, and somehow I feel that my “no tip” counter service rule is a protest against it. I tip generously for table service since you basically have to, but I would like to see that done away with too.
I was reading something the other day about the future of restaurants — hint: more counter service! — and it boiled down to the high cost of labor. I don’t really know the right way to go as a consumer who would like to see people in the service sector earn higher wages, but I’m starting to think I’m better off not patronizing counter service establishments at all.
