Mastodon: Oh, the possibilities!

It is new, it is hot, and it is here to stay! It is the furry elephant site that came to (b)eat the big little blue bird. But I don’t want to talk about why Mastodon is an awesome project. I want to show you some great and/or freaky instances making the aspiring Twitter successor fantastic.

Another account on another instance

Mastodon is a pretty awesome place to be. But if you’re only hanging out on only one instance, you might miss some of the fun. If your social media usage is a bit like mine, you like to share observations, opinions, and emotions with people you like and who are close to you. But you might also want to talk about things that are relevant to you and meet new people from these fields, be that tech stuff, activism and politics, music, art, knitting, writing — whatever.

Perhaps you might consider using more than one account then. Having more than one account on more than one instance might seem superfluous, especially if you are used to the centrality of Twitter, but also as instances are connected to one another. But you won’t be able to read the local timeline of an instance unless you have an account there. (Or you use a tool like this one that only gives very limited insight into the local timeline.)

Or maybe you want to connect to a small group of special people on a more private, less chatty instance, but you like the options a lively local timeline gives you from time to time.

Fear not! It is totally possible and even fun to register more than one account on the various Mastodon instances. Even though I only know of some apps that can handle multiple accounts (most early in development), I’m pretty sure in the near future there will be many, many more, for web, mobile and desktop. You could also log into different instances in different browser tabs as I like to do.

So here are some suggestions to perhaps spark your curiosity!

Leftist, LGBT+friendly spaces

witches.town — A cozy community with currently 1250 witchy people. Very active, still very french, although people from outside of France are starting to seep in.

Witches Town is made to provide a nice place on Mastodon for queer, feminists, anarchists and stuff as well as their sympathizers.

And if you are just there for the awesome handle, you might also consider checking out witches.academy.

anticapitalist.party — Read the label, you get what’s on it! With nearly 800 accounts a medium sized instance.

Anticapitalist Mastodon instance. Party means fun, not political party. But we’re still political.

And if you don’t like the name, the message and all that lefty stuff in general, I dare you to check out capitalism.party and pay five bucks straight on registration.

queer.party — Speaking of parties: Have a look at this little instance. It is relatively small with 125 users, but the name is unbeatable!

Queer Party is a queer-oriented Mastodon instance which generally aligns itself with the policies and goals of other instances such as mastodon.social, awoo.space and icosahedron.website, aiming as much as possible to be a safe space for its users.

soc.ialis.me — This instance calls itself generalist, though I don’t really get what they mean by that. With over 350 accounts a smaller community, but with potential. I mean — look at that logo!

A generalist Mastodon instance hosted in France.

chaos.social — a neat handle and a wonderful user base. Only 200 people are currently inhabiting that instance, but every time I made contact with one of them, they were welcoming and open. Also, the administrations frequently asks for user opinions on administrative topics, which is great!

chaos.social — because anarchy is much more fun with friends.
chaos.social is a small Mastodon instance for and by the chaos community.

Fun places to hang out

tenforward.social — basically, this is your Star Trek role-playing instance. You may of course just go there to grab yourself a pretty handle and be done with it. But why would you to that? More than 100 users are already on board.

Welcome to Ten Forward, a Star Trek themed Mastodon instance!

toot.cat — a cat-person’s dream come true. More than 500 accounts are currently registered in this small but active instance.

A mastodon instance for cats and the people that love them. In that spirit we are a home for building a radically inclusive mastodon instance.

And if you’re more of a fox person, you might find vulpine.club interesting.

mastodon.art — an art centered instance with currently over 100 users. A nice place for sharing and finding original art and artists.

Mastodon.ART is a place for your original art of all types, styles & mediums as well as ideas, constructive mentoring & discussions we hope you share with the community.

socia.esperant.io — if you’re fascinated by artificial languages, perhaps this esperanto centered instance is woth a closer look.

Mastodon por parolantoj de la internacia lingvo esperanto. Viaj mesaĝoj devas esti en aŭ pri Esperanto.

wandering.shop — an instance for the scifi and fantasy community. This sounds like a great place to hang out! More than 130 users can’t go wrong on that.

The Wandering Shop is a Mastodon instance for the science fiction and fantasy community. We want our ‘local’ timeline to have the feel of a coffee shop at a good science fiction convention: tables full of friendly conversation on a wide variety of topics.

thepractice.space —an instance dedicated to discussing all aspects of a musicians’s life.

The aim of The Practice Space is to be both a fun and a useful community for musicians. To do that, we (the admins/moderators) lean towards being positive and protecting those who have less opportunity to express themselves.

Experimental places in the Fediverse

a.weirder.earth — a place to explore strange alternative realities, weird thoughts and feelings and feel perfectly at ease doing so.

a weirder earth itself is meant to be a community that skews thoughtful and weird. Everyone who abides by the code of conduct is welcome, thoughtful weirdos most of all! :)

oulipo.social —finally a place for those who had enough of the letter “e”. “E”, as well as its smaller companion “e” are forbidden here, so, yeah. Hav* fun!

A Dcntralizd and Fdratd Social Ntwork

dolphin.town — this is the opposite to oulipo.social: Here, everything IS e. Because dolphins.

dolphin.town is a Mastodon instance where you can only say the letter e. Some instances exist that do not allow this letter. This is not helpful if you are a dolphin.
