My daughters have told me about all the right-wing TikTok’ers ‘converting’ because of George Floyd, ripping up their Donald Trump signs. I’m glad to hear it. But this fight for justice didn’t begin in 2020. It’s generations in the making.
Racism and class inequalities remain rampant in education, health care, real estate, employment and voting access. In regard to criminal ‘justice:’
- Cops kill three people every day in this country, and Black people are 600% more likely to be the victims
- One in every three Black boys born today will go to prison in his lifetime
- The United States represents less than 5% of the world’s population, but is responsible for incarcerating 25% of those locked up worldwide — predominantly for nonviolent offenses, or because they were targeted for their skin color and/or couldn’t afford proper legal representation
- We are one of a handful of ‘industrialized’ nations to still use the death penalty, which is discriminately applied
- More than 100,000 people are in solitary confinement — a human rights violation
